We will be dreaming of sunny shovel logging days and mud free mainlines. In the spirit of summer, here’s a shot of Ethan processing some logs on a bluebird day!

Some days it’s like pick up sticks, but they all need to be sorted by species, diameter, grade and length and shipped to town.

This machine is so versatile for our business because it can do both thinning and clear cut work for our operation.

The timber on this property was badly damaged by the ice storms last winter.
We had a few options but starting over made the most sense for this stand and the land owner.
The timber was cut, logged and sold to a handful of mills across the region. After logging, the brush was piled and this piece will be replanted.
Sometimes this isn’t the best option to manage your timber, and we can help with that too.

A good preventative maintenance schedule helps us keep our equipment running when we need it the most.
It also allows us to plan when to make repairs, like this crack in our heel rack. Once we saw it was cracked, we made one phone call to @precisionmaint and had a tech scheduled to come help us out. Thanks Brett for getting it welded up for us!

This site was heavily damaged by the ice storm, with some of the standing trees being split down almost to the ground.
We utilized our expertise in the industry to ship logs from this job to five different mills. Why? To maximize the return for the land owner.
The market wasn’t perfect for this stand, but they will have trees growing here again soon that won’t be dangerous to walk through and enjoy.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the industry, you might not know that each different deck of logs here is a different sort, and likely has a different destination than the one next to it.
Each mill requires different raw materials to produce their finished products. These are sorted by species, grade, diameter and length of the log.
Century Forest Management takes pride in being able to maximize the return on our customers timber. By merchandising the logs to fit different needs in the market, it brings a higher value to the logs.

Everyone seemed to like the video of our Cat/ Waratah combo, so here’s a video of our Barko with a JP Skidmore harvester head. We searched high and low for a machine that could efficiently handle the smaller diameter logs in a thinning, but still be able to fill in cutting larger stems in a clearcut setting. After the unit is cut, if it’s flat enough to shovel log, all of the trees get moved into bigger bundles. These bundles are then worked to the landing by the shovel.

The processor operator is responsible for merchandising the trees into logs before they’re loaded on a truck.
When the landowner tells you to watch out for the local bear, they’re actually serious sometimes!

Some spots are just more photogenic than others!
This time of year, during fire season, we work the early shift. We have to start early to take advantage of low temperatures and (generally speaking) higher relative humidities.
Working these hours helps reduce the risk of an operations caused fire. We also have to stick around after work is complete for up to three hours, depending on the Industrial Fire Precaution Level, IFPL, to watch for smoke in the area.

We are based out of Monroe, Oregon and usually truck all around the Willamette Valley.
Benefits start after 90 days of employment.
Pay for this role depends on experience, but ranges from $27-$30/hr OR 29%-31%.

We spent the day Friday with the Oregon Small Woodlands Association. We toured Jim and Ed Merzenich’s property who were selected as the Oregon Small Woodland Association tree farmer of the year. We did a thinning project for them back in November and December and part of the tour was the work we had done for them.

Depending on fire danger levels, sometimes we have to work our shifts in the early morning hours. Late night/ early morning is when the risk of starting a fire is much lower, due to lower temperatures and higher humidities.
