2021 Winter Lumber Prices | Log Buyers Need Logs

Over the past several weeks lumber prices have spiked similar to the trends of the unprecedented lumber price run we seen in early 2021. During the previous price run there was a large flow of burnt logs from the recent wildfires that was over supplying lumber mills, preventing timber owners from seeing the same price runs that mills were experiencing with boards. Luckily for timber owners, this time appears to be different. Salvage logging has begun to wind down and several of the salvage operations that are still active are being shut down due to the recent low snow elevations. As a result, log prices have been spiking at a similar pace to lumber. Several mills have been quoting prices over a $1,000 per MBF (1,000 board feet) for certain types of logs. Over the past week Century Forest Management has received calls from several log buyers trying to find logs available for purchase
to fulfill short term needs. With lumber rapidly climbing the last thing lumber mills want to do is run out of log supply.
We would like to relay the message we are receiving from log buyers onto our customers. If you have timber that you have been considering harvesting, now may be a great time! Even if you do not have a rocked road in place, the increased value of logs may more than cover the cost of rocking your road. The timber on this property was badly damaged by the ice storms last winter.
We had a few options but starting over made the most sense for this stand and the land owner.
The timber was cut, logged and sold to a handful of mills across the region. After logging, the brush was piled and this piece will be replanted.
Sometimes this isn’t the best option to manage your timber, and we can help with that too.

A good preventative maintenance schedule helps us keep our equipment running when we need it the most.
It also allows us to plan when to make repairs, like this crack in our heel rack. Once we saw it was cracked, we made one phone call to @precisionmaint and had a tech scheduled to come help us out. Thanks Brett for getting it welded up for us!

We utilized our expertise in the industry to ship logs from this job to five different mills. Why? To maximize the return for the land owner.
The market wasn’t perfect for this stand, but they will have trees growing here again soon that won’t be dangerous to walk through and enjoy.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the industry, you might not know that each different deck of logs here is a different sort, and likely has a different destination than the one next to it.
Each mill requires different raw materials to produce their finished products. These are sorted by species, grade, diameter and length of the log.

After the unit is cut, if it’s flat enough to shovel log, all of the trees get moved into bigger bundles. These bundles are then worked to the landing by the shovel.

The processor operator is responsible for merchandising the trees into logs before they’re loaded on a truck.

Some spots are just more photogenic than others!
This time of year, during fire season, we work the early shift. We have to start early to take advantage of low temperatures and (generally speaking) higher relative humidities.
Working these hours helps reduce the risk of an operations caused fire. We also have to stick around after work is complete for up to three hours, depending on the Industrial Fire Precaution Level, IFPL, to watch for smoke in the area.

We spent the day Friday with the Oregon Small Woodlands Association. We toured Jim and Ed Merzenich’s property who were selected as the Oregon Small Woodland Association tree farmer of the year. We did a thinning project for them back in November and December and part of the tour was the work we had done for them.

Depending on fire danger levels, sometimes we have to work our shifts in the early morning hours. Late night/ early morning is when the risk of starting a fire is much lower, due to lower temperatures and higher humidities.
